The Thanksgiving Story
400 years ago, there were many people in England who were not happy. They were not happy because the king wouldn´t let them pray to the God they liked. So they decided to leave their homes in England and travel to a new country where they could be happy. These people are known as the pilgrims. Pilgrims are people who are always traveling, or on a journey. They traveled across the ocean on a ship called the Mayflower. There were 100 people on board the ship- Mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, babies. It was very crowded and cold. They sailed on the ocean for 2 months. In November, the Pilgrims saw land for the first time. The spot where the pilgrims landed is called Plymoth Rock, and it is in the state of Massachusetts, United States of America. They built houses and a church. But did not know how to grow any food. The weather was very cold. A lot of the pilgrims became sick and died. There were Indians at Plymouth rock and the Pilgrims were scared of them. But one day, an Indian named Squanto came to the houses of the Pilgrims to help them grow corn, wheat, barley, and peas. The pilgrims and the Indians became friends and lived together in Plymouth. To celebrate their friendship and the harvest the pilgrims and indians had a feast to give thanks to their new life and new friendship. This feast was called Thanksgiving. They ate turkey, corn, potatoes, and many different kinds of food. Today we celebrate Thanksgiving on the 4th Thursday of November. We give thanks for everything we have. I am thankful for my family and friends, and my health. What are you thankful?
